The violence of bear market rallies

Oct 07, 2022

Almost 60 of the 100 biggest daily percentage gains of the S&P 500 since 1928 happened when the market was in bear market territory. This is surprising as the S&P 500 was only 30% of the time in bear markets. The conclusion is that these so-called bear market rallies are by nature extremely violent and hence costly for investors to miss out on. As this week has shown again, it looks almost impossible to foresee and time them correctly!
